Interview mit Lance Dowdle (From Ashes To New) - English version

Just a week ago FROM ASHES TO NEW released their third record „Panic“. I had the opportunity to interview Lance Dowdle, to talk about their best record so far. One week ago they couldn’t wait for their reactions and opinions, but finally it is released. If you like to read more about the process and the partnership with Anders Fridén, take a look at the answers of Lance Dowdle.

Sarah-Jane: You have a partnership with the producer Colin Brittain who has already worked with Papa Roach and All Time Low. Are you therefore somewhat anxious that you might sound too much like Papa Roach?

Lance Dowdle: Absolutely Not. We chose Colin after working with him on “Nowhere to Run” and having a blast in the studio. We knew that his analog creativity would pair perfect for our vision of giving fans the old Linkin Park feel that they’ve been missing, while at the same time pushing the modern From Ashes to New even further.

Sarah-Jane: Why of all things did you work for “Panic” and “Wait” together with Eric Ron?

Lance Dowdle: We did a writing trip out in Los Angeles and Erik was new for us. We had great chemistry and we’re able to flow through tunes in a very organized, timely fashion. He has a great background that we already knew about, but for us, it’s all about how we connect. So with both Colin and Erik on the same record, we feel that we have our biggest release to date! There may or may not be extra “Erik” songs to be released at a later date.

Sarah-Jane: In relation to your song “Panic" do you think that social media is used too excessively, so that it raises panic even more? What could be done about the panic?

Lance Dowdle: What can be done about the panic? Hmmmm honestly I’m just waiting for a Meteor to hit the Earth or maybe some new plagues to wipe us all out. Honestly, I don’t think there is a uniform answer. Social Media is the ultimate double edged sword. We can’t have a future without it, but we can’t have any type of personal opinions or be ourselves without being harassed for it in some way. It’s definitely creating more hazards for our younger, more impressionable youth. Mental illness is more prevalent than it ever has been.

Sarah-Jane: Are your texts based on your own true experience or events?

Lance Dowdle: Absolutely. Outside of Bulletproof, which paints a very clear picture based on worldly events, we try to write what hits home the most. This record takes a turn for us as writers. We would usually try to write more uplifting lyrics, but I think it’s time people know how we truly feel and what our inner turmoils have done to us. I think it’s important for our audience to relate to us on that level.

Sarah-Jane: In your opinion, why do you think that “Bulletproof” is so well received from the audience?

Lance Dowdle: Musically, it hits you right in the chest immediately. The verses are absolutely haunting. The melodies and flow pair so well together, and by the time the chorus kicks in you know you’re in for an anti-anthem that will leave you with chills.

Sarah-Jane: How did you get the opportunity to perform a song for the movie “The Retaliators" and how was the partnership with Anders Fridén?

Lance Dowdle: This is only one of many movies our label has made. They are mostly known for the Motley Crue biopic, which opened the doors for them to make more feature films. They needed a song that would fit the upcoming movie and we had just what they were looking for! We had toured with Anders before and knew his added intensity on top of Danny’s would be a 1-2 punch for the listeners. Basically we just wanted to knock your ass out LOL.

Sarah-Jane: What's your favorite track and why? Is there something special with the music or lyrics?

Lance Dowdle: On a personal level, SideFX is a look inside my life through both my own battles as well as family and friends that I’m close with. We’re always yearning for a cure while suffering the consequences of greed at the hands of those with the money and power to do the right thing, but will they ever actually help people, or just keep destroying lives?

Sarah-Jane: What are your wishes for the future?

Lance Dowdle: Touring would be nice! We are longing to get back over to Europe in 2021, especially after fans have had a taste of this record. We can’t wait to come back to all the big festivals as well! Rock AM we’re coming for you!

Sarah-Jane: If you could choose a song for which you would be recognized for, which one would that be? And why?

Lance Dowdle: Most people know us from Through it All, but that was a different era. I have a feeling we will be known from one of the songs on Panic this time around. Which one? I’m not sure, but even if you closed your eyes and picked one, I would agree!

Sarah-Jane: What would you say is special about the album?

Lance Dowdle: The writing was turned up to 11 on this record. The lyrical journey we take you on is true to ourselves, while at the same time we musically “HAMMER” it into your heads with the might of Thor! Every song on this record can stand on its own. We didn’t have the desire for filler. We know what our audience has been waiting for and this is it.

Sarah-Jane: The band has found its own dynamic. How did you find your chemistry, and could you improve and enhance your song writing process?

Lance Dowdle: I believe this question has been indirectly answered through the previous statements. It’s kind of the same way in the dating world. It takes time and experience to know if someone is meant to be in your life. Same as it was for us in adjusting our lineup. As the bonds deepen, so do the feelings we express to you through our songs.

Sarah-Jane: Would you like to address something personal to your fans?

Lance Dowdle: We really hope you connect even more with us on this record. If you resonate with what we are saying, then obviously you’ve been through some Trauma yourselves at some point. Just remember that the best thing you can possibly do is reach out and seek help. The more you bottle in the negativity, the darker it's going to be when it’s eventually released. Find a positive way to express yourself, or just find a friend to talk to about your problems. Finding support in some way, shape, or form is the most important thing you can do for yourself. Stay strong, and we can’t wait to see you in the future!
