Er ist ein amerikanischer Blues Rock-Gitarrist, Sänger und Komponist, der zweimal für den Grammy nominiert wurde. JOE BONAMASSA ist sehr produktiv und hat eine enorme Ansammlung von Alben hinter sich, darunter ein Dutzend Liveaufnahmen. Das neue wurde im Sydney Opera House in Australien aufgenommen und beinhaltet mehrheitlich Melodien von seinem hochgelobten Album “Blues Of Desperation” (2016). Der Titeltrack daraus wird zu einem musikalischen Abenteuer. Du kannst darauf zählen, dass es hochqualitative musikalische Unterhaltung wird, wenn dieser Mann involviert ist.
Bonamassa ist als Solokünstler aktiv, unterhält aber ebenso einige gemeinschaftliche Projekte mit anderen Musikern wie BETH HART. Er ist darüber hinaus neben GLENN HUGHES und anderen ein Mitglied der Rockgruppe BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION.
In das “Land down under” brachte Joe eine Band mit Spitzenmusikern, darunter Anton Fig (“The Late Night Show” mit David Letterman im Fernsehen, FREHLEY´S COMET) und Reese Wynans (STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN & DOUBLE TROUBLE, mit denen er auch noch ein Mitglied der Rock´n´Roll Hall Of Fame wurde) an den Keyboards.
“Live At Sydney Opera House” ist als CD mit einem sorgfältig gestalteten Cover veröffentlicht worden und beinhaltet ein exklusives Booklet für Sammler. Es wurde auch als Doppel-LP veröffentlicht, wo das Lied “Livin´Easy” als Bonustrack angehängt wurde.
Diese Edition vermittelt ein großartiges Live-Feeling. Die Songs werden, aufgefüllt mit aufregenden Soloparts und Improvisationen länger als sie sind. Nicht nur von Mr. Bonamassa persönlich, sondern auch von seinen Musikergenossen auf der Bühnen, speziell Wynans an den Keyboards. Die Scheibe beginnt mit von Reese gespielten klassischen Pianotönen. Sie gehen in eine Jam über, die sich mit dem Gitarrenspiel des Hauptkünstlers abwechselt. Eine Erwartungshaltung dreht sich in der Luft, dann heben sowohl der Song als auch die Show ab. “This Train” rollt umgehend in einem guten, treibenden Tempo an. Saxophonist Paulie Cerra und Lee Thornburg an der Trompete steigern das Erlebnis. Zusammen mit Bassist Michael Rhodes, obendrein den Backgroundsängern Mahalia Barnes, Juanita Tippins und Gary Pinto wird das Konzert vollständig. In seiner Gesamtheit mit Klasse, Stil und elegantem Blues. Joe bedient sein Instrument mit einem tollen Talent, seine Soli klingen gleichsam überschwänglich und beseelt, oder variieren zwischen klar und rau in einer angenehmen Weise. Nebenbei spielt er nicht nur wundervoll, sondern ist auch mit einer fantastisch guten Gesangsstimme gesegnet.
Die Produktion hat eine sehr gute Klangqualität, was besonders in “Drive” zu hören ist. Es ist speziell am Anfang zu vernehmen, wenn Joes Samtstimme ganz nahe zu Dir kommen zu scheint. Später bekommt das Publikum Thornburgs Trompeten im jazzigen Stil serviert, welches von einem großartigen Gitarrensolo von Bonamassa übernommen wird. Einen starken Eindruck hinterlässt auch Figs maßvolles und gleichzeitig kraftvolles Drumming.
Ein Cover des von George Terry geschriebenen Eric Clapton-Songs “Mainline Florida” kreuzt auf. Das Original ist gut, aber JOE BONAMASSA hebt es ein Stück höher und die Menge applaudiert gutgelaunt. Hier finden wir eine treibende Kraft, welche die Blasinstrumente bestärkt und Reese spielt lebhaft auf seinen Tasten.
“Mountain Climbing” ist ein perfektes Beispiel davon, zu was der Gitarrist und Sänger in der Lage ist. Die Komposition ist superb und vermittelt ein exzellentes Gefühl, welches Dich ergreift. Der Chor erhebt den Refrain noch mehr und alle Musiker harmonieren in perfekter Interaktion. JOE BONAMASSA pendelt zwischen langsamem Streichen über die Saiten und dem verspielten Abbrennen cooler Riffs. Es ist als ob er sich mit sich selbst duellieren würde. Manchmal nehmen die Gitarrentöne ein paar Stufen im molltönenden Treppenhaus herunter, was dem herrlichen Stück einen gewissen Touch verleiht.
Das starke, rockige Gitarrensolo in der Mitte des brillanten “How Deep This River Runs” ist pulsierend und emotional. Wie alles vor dem Chorus aufgebaut und dann mit den Stimmen der Backgroundsänger gefüllt wird, ist absolut überragend. Die Emotionen steigen in Deinem Körper auf wie Blasen in einem Glas Mineralwasser, um dann überzulaufen. Ich fließe behaglich auf diesem Fluss hinweg und genieße es vollkommen.
“Love Ain´t A Love Song” (Different Shades Of Blue, 2014) ist über sieben Minuten länger als das Original. Unter anderem beginnt es mit einem gleichwohl neckendenen wie flirtenden Gitarrensolo. Unsere Aufmerksamkeit ist hier ein wenig mehr gefangen. Er erkundet jeden Millimeter seiner Gitarre. Mit Hilfe dieses Gitarrenzauberers singen die Saiten ihr eigenes Lied, welches das Publikum bezaubert.
Obwohl ich das Studioalbum besitze, dass der Grundstock für jenes neue Material bildet, war es als ob ich erst jetzt erkannt hätte wie gut es ist. Nicht alle Songs werden live besser, nicht von jedem, doch es eröffnet eine neue Dimension. Die verschiedenen Albumtypen sind auf ihre Art beide gut.
Der Gitarrenmeister zeichnet die Stücke in wunderschöne emotionale Farben und Du kommst in gute Stimmung. (Anna)

He is an American bluesrock-guitarist, singer and composer, who has become two-time Grammy nominated. JOE BONAMASSA is very productive and has a tremendous collection of albums behind him, including almost a dozen live recordings. The new one was made in the Sydney Opera House, Australia and contains mostly melodies from the acclaimed album "Blues Of Desperation" (2016). The title track from here becomes a musical adventure. You can count on it being high quality music-entertainment when this man is involved.
Bonamassa is active as a solo artist, but has also made several collaborative projects with other artists, such as BETH HART. He is also a member in the rockgroup BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION, together with GLENN HUGHES, among others.

This edition gives a great live-feeling. The songs get longer as they are filled with exciting solo parts and improvisations. Not only by Mr Bonamassa himself, but also by his fellow musicians on stage, especially Wynans on keyboard. The record begins with classic piano notes, performed by Reese. They switch to a jamming, alternating with the main artists guitar playing. An expectation spins around in the air and then both the song and show sets off. "This Train" rolls on at a good, energizing pace right away. Saxophonist Paulie Cerra and Lee Thornburg on the trumpet increase the experience. Together with bassist Michael Rhodes, as well as background singers Mahalia Barnes, Juanita Tippins and Gary Pinto, the concert becomes complete. An entirety with class, style and elegant blues. Joe handles his instrument with super skill and his solos can sound both exuberant and soulful, or vary between clear and raspy, in a very comfortable way. Besides, he not only plays wonderfully, but has been gifted with a fantastic good singing voice as well.
The production has a very good sound quality, which is heard especially in "Drive". It is particularly noticeable in the beginning, as Joes velvety voice seems to come very close to you. Later the audience is served Thornburgs trumpeting in jazz style, which is then replaced by an awesome guitar solo from Bonamassa. A strong impression also comes from Figs both restrained and at the same time powerful drumming.
A cover of the Eric Clapton song "Mainline Florida", written by George Terry, turns up. The original is good, but JOE BONAMASSA lifts it a little bit more and the audience applauds cheerfully. Here we find a driving force, which the brass instruments strengthens and Reese plays lively on the keys.
"Mountain Climbing" is a perfect example of what this guitarist and singer can do. The composition is superb and gives an excellent feeling, which grabs hold of you. The choir lifts the chorus even more and all musicians harmonize in a perfect interaction. JOE BONAMASSA alternates between slowly sliding across the strings, to playfully burn off cool riffs. It is like he duels a little with himself. Occasionally the guitar tones takes a few steps down in a staircase of minor, which adds a special touch to this magnificent piece.
The strong, rocking guitar solo in the middle of brilliant “How Deep This River Runs” is vibrant and emotional. How everything is built up before the chorus and then filled with the voices of the background singers is absolutely outstanding. Like the bubbles in a glass of mineral water, the emotions rise inside the body, and then overflow. I float comfortably on this river and fully enjoy it.
"Love Ain’t A Love Song" (Different Shades Of Blue, 2014) is about seven minutes longer than the original. Among other things, it starts with a guitar solo, in both a teasing and flirty way. Our attention is caught a little extra. He explores every millimeter of his guitar. The strings sing their own song with the help of this guitar magician, who enchants his audience.
Although I have the studio record, which is the basis for this new material, it was just as if I now discovered how good it is. Not all songs get better live, not from anyone, but it adds another dimension. The different types of albums are both good, in their own way.
